The development of the society is pushed mostly by the advance of technology and scientists are the people who work hard every day to enhance the advance of technology. With more and more findings being produced, people start to wonder if scientists should be responsible for the negative consequence of those findings. Though some people tend to agree with it, since this can make the scientists more cautious with their own discoveries, I still believe that it is not reasonable to ask scientists to be responsible for the negative consequences of their findings.
To begin with, the science and technology may not be advanced enough to enable scientists to predict all the consequences. For example, hundreds of years ago, air-conditioners were invented for the purpose of controlling the temperature indoors. Since its invention, people have enjoyed a comfortable room temperature, neither too cold in winter nor too hot in summer. However, air-conditioners primarily use Freon to lower the room temperature in summer and Freon could be detrimental to the ozone which functions as a filter to protect humans from harmful ultraviolet rays. This phenomenon hasn’t be detected until very recently, which means scientists who invented air-conditioners a century ago couldn’t have foreseen that air-conditioners could exert hazardous effects on ozone sphere, due to the limited development of science and technology at that time. Thus requiring the scientists to be responsible for the ozone sphere damage caused by Freon cannot be very reasonable.
Moreover, scientists cannot really control who will make use of their discoveries. For instance, the invention of internet has greatly changed our life. With the internet, people could talk with others not only all over the country, but also throughout the world; the information people can gain access to is covering an increasingly larger area; exchanging documents and materials has become ever faster and more convenient. However, the internet has also been used by some criminals who commit frauds. For example, people may use internet to disguise as police officers or government officials to cheat others and because of the internet, frauds could reach more people and damage more people’s life. This surely shows that internet brings lots of negative influence to the society. But scientists cannot really control who can use the internet and who cannot. It is actually the responsibility of the governments to make some regulates to ensure the proper use of the internet. Therefore, scientists cannot be asked to be responsible.
Furthermore, scientists only have a limited range of knowledg. Nobody can know everything, not even scientists. Scientists are supposed to be experts, but they are only experts in some specific fields. For example, people who invented cars might be very good at engines and mechanics, but they probably didn’t know burning carbon dioxide could cause global warming, as they might have limited knowledge in the field of environmental protection; people who design games for classroom activities may make classes clear and interesting, but may potentially harm class order, since the inventors may not be expert in the area of class management; city designers may be able to make the city planning more proper and more beautiful, but also may cause huge pressure to the budget of the governments, as the designers may not have much knowledge in budget control. In this case, it is really hard for scientists to know the negative influence in advance and thus it is not reasonable to ask them to be responsible for it.
To sum up, it is not right to ask scientists to be responsible for the negative influence of their discoveries.
