Lawmakers across the globe have debated whether to institute compulsory age limits for youngsters to attend full-time schooling. Considering that it is universally-recognized that being 18 years old is the age of majority in most nations, the merits and drawbacks of implementing such a policy will be discussed.
With regards to the benefits of keeping teenagers in an educational environment until they become adults, they would be more mature and educated to make well-thought decisions about what to do when they graduate. Furthermore, a high school diploma is increasingly becoming insufficient to secure a fantastic, well-paid job in society nowadays, indicating the necessity to keep students in school to advance their educations. Moreover, there is a shift in the types of jobs available in society whereby positions that were traditionally occupied by high school graduates are being replaced with robots, signifying the need for higher-skilled labour in this day and age.
On the contrary, with regards to the cost of education, not all societies offer free schooling until university and parents may not be able to afford sending their kids to school if laws change. Additionally, if teenagers do not attend school, due to their lack of self-control and self-discipline, they would likely use their time in less productive ways such as playing games, committing crimes or causing trouble. It is also the case that certain education systems cannot handle a large influx of students as there may be a shortage of teachers and materials for every student.
All in all, the advantages certainly outweigh the disadvantages when it comes to mandatory schooling until the age of 18. Nonetheless, not every society has the resources or skilled labor to cater to the needs of every single student.
